I decided to drive it over to the maintenance bay and take the pickup I had been planning for my backup plan. I pushed the driver into the passenger side as best I could. I hopped in and tried to lean forward to stay away from the blood on the seatback and passenger side. I stomped on the gas and drove on the shot out tires the quarter mile over to the maintenance bay. I parked a few yards in front of the bay, jumped out of the HMMWV and ran inside. I hit the button to open the door. I finally took my laptop bag off and threw it on the passenger side of the seat, then jumped in the driver’s side and started it up. I pulled out and stopped next to the HMMWV. The pickup had a soft snap-down tonneau cover. I undid the snaps on the side and threw the cover back. I grabbed all the guns and ammo I could quickly find out of the HMMWV and threw them in the back of the pickup. I found a couple cases of MREs and some water cans and threw them in the pickup as well. Finally, I grabbed a flak vest and chest rig that wasn’t cut and threw them in the driver’s seat.
I knew I was pushing my luck for time, but I then decided I didn’t want to give away my escape method that quickly. So I drove the HMMWV and parked it behind a large stack of airline baggage carts where it wouldn’t be spotted on first glance. I ran back to the maintenance bay and closed the garage door and then locked the access door on my way out.
Once back in the pickup, I headed for the “flap” I had cut the other night. I thought about checking the other HMMWV, but I already had way more stuff than I needed, probably too much. If I needed more than a couple hundred rounds from here on out, I was fighting a battle I couldn’t win. I hadn’t checked the MRE cases, but I figured I had enough food for a couple weeks if I was careful. As I drove by the wreckage, I felt a pang of guilt again for all the destruction and death I had caused and that I had just left Chavez laying on the tarmac.
